A Luxury Proposal Story for an Asian Couple
June 26, 2025
Have you proposed yet? I proposed to my now wife Beth back in November 2017, so quite a while ago now! My friends helped me create the plan and man was it joyful. There’s something powerful about a proposal – you’re making the decision to begin a new life with the one you love! Where you do the proposal can also have it’s significance especially when it’s rooted in personal history or meaningful places. This luxury proposal story for an Asian couple is one of those for sure!
This surprise engagement took place at Sidney Sussex College in Cambridge, where Gabby, now living in Malaysia with his partner Sher, once studied. It was an emotional, thoughtful moment full of intention, captured discreetly and naturally in line with my editorial documentary style. Although I’m based in Kent, I occasionally return to Cambridge for weddings and proposals like this one. This blog follows a story of love, how he planned it and some practical tips for couples and photographers alike.
How an emotional surprise engagement at Sidney Sussex, Cambridge reveals the beauty of editorial proposal photography (and why couples near Kent deserve the same luxury experience.)

The Moment That Changed Everything
I don’t know when it was but Gabby decided for sure that he wanted to marry his girlfriend Sher, how adorable! Gabby reached out to me over Instagram, quietly and carefully. He wanted to propose to Sher while visiting Cambridge, a city full of personal significance to him having studied there. The plan was simple on the surface: take her on a tour of his old college, Sidney Sussex, and pop the question beneath a tree he’d spent many a reflective (or revising!) hour under. But behind the simplicity was a ton of thought, subtlety, and coordination. Those plans are exactly what I love helping with.

Why Cambridge? Why This Tree?
Gabby had studied at Sidney Sussex University and was returning with Sher from Malaysia, where they both now live. It wasn’t just about getting engaged but about going back to where it started. The tree he chose wasn’t random. It was his tree. I’m not sure I have a “my tree” myself, but I can always remember my sister’s strangely.
Anyway, for this luxury proposal story for an Asian couple we scouted out where ahead of time over DM conversations on Instagram. We worked out exactly when would be a “normal” time to visit, where I could hide, and how his sister (who had flown in with them) could help bring everything together. Something we also included was having his sister hand them a bespoke bouquet moments after Sher said yes. Cute right?

Planning a Surprise Proposal from Asia
When you’re planning a luxury proposal story for an Asian couple from across the globe, it takes more than just a good camera, it takes experience. I photographed my first proposal 10 years ago now so knew what would work and what wouldn’t work
Gabby wanted everything to remain a surprise. We kept our entire communication on Instagram DMs to avoid Sher spotting anything in his inbox or calendar. Together we planned everything quietly. His sister picked up the bouquet and we timed everything so precisely that when the couple rounded the corner, I was already in position, out of sight.
As they stood in front of the tree, chatting, I slowly emerged and began documenting every moment. From the gentle lead-up, to Gabby lowering himself to one knee, to Sher’s smiley joy. These are the kind of moments you can’t authentically recreate. And that’s why this sort of photography matters.

A Quiet Approach: My Editorial & Documentary Style
What makes a luxury proposal story for an Asian couple stand out isn’t poses but moments. Anyone can ask a man to get down on one knee and take a photo, but there’s something “alive” about taking a photograph of it actually happening.
My background in fashion photography may have taught me to master lighting and composition, but it’s the candid moments I truly care about. My approach is a blend of documentary-style storytelling and elegant, editorial style.
I don’t interrupt the scene, instruct or pose moments like this. I joyfully observe and record with care. After the proposal, we wandered the university grounds and made time for portraits that still felt natural, unforced, and full of context.
Even for people searching for a proposal photographer in Kent, this kind of genuine storytelling is generally what they’re looking for.

From “Yes” to Wandering the Backs of Cambridge
Once the initial excitement from this luxury proposal story for an Asian couple calmed down and hugs and kisses were exchanged, Sher showed me her incredible ruby ring! Surrounded by diamonds, catching the light like something from a storybook it was amazing. Then we took a quiet walk through the college and into town.
They stopped at their favourite old food truck, deeply personal if you’re a foody like me, and we captured a few relaxed moments there too. There’s something grounding about a simple scene like that after such a big moment.
From there, we strolled through the Backs near King’s College. Because I’ve photographed weddings at Cambridge colleges over the years (especially when I lived there before returning home to Ramsgate in Kent), I was kindly allowed to continue shooting in some of the more exclusive areas. We were welcomed in warmly, and it was the perfect final chapter for their engagement story.

Sneak Peeks That Same Evening
One of the luxuries I offer to couples is same-day previews. I don’t overbook myself during the week because I want to serve each client deeply and intentionally.
By the evening, Gabby and Sher had a collection of beautifully edited preview images in their inbox, ready to share the news with loved ones across the world. I can’t tell you how many couples have told me what a gift that was to share this moment with their families right away.
It’s the small touches that elevate a proposal session from good to high-end.

Planning Your Proposal? Top Tips to Make It Go Smoothly
If you’re planning to propose and want the moment photographed beautifully and discreetly, here are some practical tips to help things go without a problem:
- Keep communication low-key – Stick to Instagram DMs or encrypted messaging apps rather than emails or calendars your partner might see. Better still, delete the evidence and make note somewhere that only you know.
- Pick smart moments to chat with your photographer – Early mornings, solo walks, or errands are perfect times to discuss plans without raising suspicion. Even at work is a good time if they’re okay with that!
- Don’t overcomplicate the logistics – Keep the route and plan simple so you’re not worrying about timings, maps, or coordinating too many people. Parking, general public and other things can be problems if you don’t keep it easy.
- Make it feel natural – Build the proposal into something you’d genuinely do together, like a walk, a college tour, or grabbing food. Don’t make it something OTT.
- Choose a meaningful location – The spot where you propose doesn’t have to but can have emotional weight if it’s nostalgic, symbolic, or somewhere that feels right.
- Think about the light and time of day – Late afternoon light tends to be softer and more flattering (and easier for your photographer), but if practicalities mean it has to be midday then so be it.
- Let the moment breathe – Don’t rush it. Pause, chat, take in the setting before you get down on one knee. You may have a plan, but if you keep steady the natural pacing gives room for authentic emotions to show.

Expert Proposal Photography in Kent
While this shoot took place in Cambridge, most of my work is centred in Kent, where I now live. I spent four years in Cambridge but now the sea calls us home. I regularly photograph engagements and proposals across the county: towns like Canterbury, Whitstable and Deal. Not to mention my coastal favourites like Margate, Ramsgate and St Margarets.
Cambridge just happened to be the location for this proposal, but the care and photographic approach I bring to my Kent proposals is exactly the same. It’s a chunk more costly for proposals in Cambridge as you’re adding on 5 hours of travel, but either way I believe in grounding every shoot in meaning. Whether it’s a sentimental walk on the beach or a surprise picnic in the University you grew up in.
I know the light, locations, and seasonal shifts in Kent like the back of my hand. That kind of local knowledge matters when planning a shoot you’ll remember forever.

Past Experience & Style You Can Trust
You may or may not know that I’ve spent years blending my editorial fashion background with a documentary eye before it became popular. My vibe has always been capturing not just how it looked, but how it made you feel.
That means knowing to keep hands off and be kind as to make even the most camera-shy person feel at ease. I think it’s the emotional awareness in my character that has led me to work with clients from all over the world, and to have my work featured in places like Italian Vogue’s “Best Of” category.
Gabby didn’t choose me because I had a flashy sales pitch, but because he could feel the care and quiet precision in the images I share online. He knew I’d handle this with discretion, warmth, and finesse. That’s exactly what I want every couple to feel when they book.

The Value of Being Present in the Moment
I often tell couples: Your job is to be present in the moment. Mine is to take photographs so that you remember it.
The best proposals happen when you’re not worrying about how you look or whether the light’s perfect. That’s my job. Don’t worry that your love might not be in her favourite outfit, keep it authentic. I plan carefully, arrive early, work discreetly, and make space for real emotion that matters more than aesthetics.
That was especially important for Gabby and Sher. They weren’t looking for a performative Instagram shoot. They were sharing a milestone and I was there to witness it without intruding on it. That’s the kind of work I love doing, and it’s the kind of experience I offer on couple shoots across Kent and beyond.

For Photographers: How to Nail a Surprise Proposal Shoot
If you’re photographing a proposal, especially one that’s been carefully planned from abroad or under wraps, here are some helpful things to keep in mind:
- Always bring a backup camera – You only get one shot at this moment. If something fails, you need a second body ready to go instantly. I have one packed in the backpack I carry and have digital on my right hand and film on left.
- Use a longer lens to start with – Something like a 70-200mm lets you stay well out of sight while still catching facial expressions and body language. Prime 105mm could be good, but I like the extra length of the 2.8 70-200.
- Be subtle – Blend into the background by pretending to photograph something else nearby, whether it’s architecture, tourists, birds or street scenes.
- Scout your hiding spot beforehand – Know exactly where you’ll be and how you’ll move into position so you’re not fumbling when things kick off.
- Check your settings early – Light can change quickly, especially outdoors, so dial in your exposure before the couple even arrives.
- Read the rhythm of the moment – Let them settle into the space before the big question happens, and don’t jump out too soon.
- Celebrate them when it’s done – Acknowledge the moment, offer genuine congratulations, and let them know how special it was to document it.
