Fine Art Wedding Photographer in Kent | A Romantic Wedding at The Bell Hotel Sandwich

June 11, 2026

Weddings

Sandwich is one of my favourite little villages in Kent, and it is arguably one of the most picturesque places to have your wedding too. Jemma and Ethan’s wedding at The Bell Hotel in Sandwich was exactly that – like a painting. A warm summer celebration filled with family, emotion, beautiful details, and plenty of those unpredictable moments that make wedding photography so meaningful.

As a fine art wedding photographer, my approach has always been about creating images that feel timeless and artistic while still preserving the honest atmosphere of the day. I love beautiful light, stylish fashionable portraits, and photographs that have that elevated feeling, but I never let that take away from the realness of the day. Come with me as I take you through some of the highlights of their wedding in Sandwich.

What is a Fine Art Wedding Photographer anyway?

A fine art wedding photographer is a type of photographer that I’ve heard lots in the 14 years I’ve been in business, and it’s only recently I have been able to identify with it. For me it is about creating photographs that look like art, or “fine art”. It is not just allowing a wedding day to unfold naturally, but understanding light, composition, styling, and being able to mute tones and enhance others to elevate an image as I see it as an artist.

My background in fashion photography has always influenced the way I approach weddings. Studying at UCA in Canterbury and creating imagery with magazines and models in mind taught me how powerful a beautifully crafted photograph can be. I used to take forever on one image, because I knew it would be in a magazine. Nowadays I love images that feel stylish and timeless, but I never want a wedding gallery to lose the personality of the people in it.

A fine art wedding photographer is someone who can recognise moments and capture them in a way that feels artistic, honest, and connected to your story. It is where editorial influence meets documentary storytelling, creating images that look beautiful today but still feel meaningful decades from now.

I also love incorporating analogue film into my work because it adds another layer of character. The combination of digital and film creates a wedding gallery that feels polished, but never too perfect.

Ultimately, fine art wedding photography is not just about how your photographs look. It is about how they make you feel when you look back.

A family-friendly wedding day at The Bell Hotel Sandwich

Did you know that not all weddings I shoot are family friendly? What I mean by that is children aren’t always invited, which there’s nothing wrong with that. But for The Bell Hotel it’s a wonderful wedding venue in Sandwich where the children were welcome and everything happens in one place. It creates a relaxed flow through the day, which is especially valuable when children are involved.

Jemma got ready in the bridal suite with her eldest daughter and bridesmaids, while Ethan arrived with their sons and the groomsmen. There was already that feeling of a family celebration rather than simply a formal traditional event. It’s also mega practical to “divide and conquer” when it comes to children too!

The bridal suite balcony was a highlight on such a beautiful summer’s day. We made use of the natural light and the outdoor space, creating some elegant portraits without pulling Jemma away from the excitement happening around her.

For couples and wedding planners planning a wedding at The Bell Hotel Sandwich, the location is also incredibly practical. Sandwich has several large car parks, making it easy for guests to arrive, and couples usually have access to the hotel car park as part of their wedding arrangements. The quay car park is particularly useful for guests arriving from further away.

Capturing authentic moments with analogue film and digital photography

One of the things I loved most about Jemma and Ethan’s wedding was their investment in analogue film photography alongside their digital wedding photography.

Film has been popular for the last few years and I’m always happy to accommodate. There is something beautiful about not fully knowing what your photographs will look like until they come back from the lab. Each frame feels special, and the final images have a sentiment that is difficult to replicate.

My background studying at UCA in Canterbury and my early work in fashion photography shaped the way I see weddings as a fine art wedding photographer. I have always been drawn towards style, composition, and creating imagery that feels beautiful, but I also believe the best photographs come from allowing real life to happen. I think it’s all in the cropping rather than the posing or directing.

That is why combining film and digital works so well.

Digital photography gives us the ability to capture every important moment with confidence, while analogue film adds another layer of fine art and nostalgia. Together, they create a wedding gallery that feels both polished and personal.

Jemma and Ethan invested in multiple rolls of film for their bespoke wedding photography package, which allowed us to create those timeless photographs alongside the documentary moments of the day.

Emotional moments, confetti, and a celebration full of character

The ceremony was incredibly family-focused and emotional. All the tears! There were tears from the couple, tears from the children, and plenty of moments where you could feel how much the day meant to everyone there.

One of my favourite moments was Ethan’s reaction when they were officially married. That “can’t keep it in” punch in the air summed up the whole atmosphere. It was genuine, joyful, and completely unplanned. It reminded me of how thankful I was to marry my wife (8 years this year!)

After the ceremony, the confetti photographs outside The Bell Hotel were full of energy. We then headed towards the quay for some family photographs, making sure the children had some space to run around.

A lovely part of the day was making the group photographs accessible for Ethan’s grandma. Rather than asking her to travel too far, we found a sheltered spot close to the venue so she could be involved comfortably.

Those small decisions are often what make fine art wedding photography feel personal. It is not just about creating beautiful images, it is about understanding the people in front of the camera.

Fine art wedding photography with authenticity at its heart

My aim as a fine art wedding photographer in Kent has always been to create photographs that couples genuinely treasure, whether that’s for weekday, weekend or multi-day weddings.

I believe people are happy to invest in fine art wedding photography because they are not just looking for a record of the day. They want something that reflects how it felt. My style combines editorial influences with documentary storytelling. My fashion photography background taught me how to work with light, posing, and composition, but weddings taught me the importance of letting moments unfold naturally.

I want couples to feel comfortable, especially those who tell me they are nervous about being photographed.

Jemma and Ethan mentioned that they hated having their photo taken, but after years of following my work they knew they wanted me to capture their wedding and that’s why investing in luxury photography is worth it.

Their review really summed up why I do what I do:

“After many years stalking Toms instagram, we knew we didn’t want anyone else to shoot our day. Tom’s work is fantastic and from a couple who hate having their photo taken, Tom made us feel completely comfortable throughout. We wanted photos to treasure forever and he delivered.”

A summer evening around the streets of Sandwich

After dinner, speeches, and a beautiful moment where Ethan’s grandma prayed to Jesus before the meal, the day continued downstairs. The bar and terrace beside the quay were perfect for the evening. Guests mingled, enjoyed the atmosphere, and relaxed as the sun started to set.

Because it was such a warm day, everyone was enjoying being outside rather than rushing towards the dance floor, but when the first dance arrived, it became a real highlight.

Later, we took a walk through the beautiful streets of Sandwich for their couple photographs. This is one of my favourite parts of wedding photography because it gives couples a chance to step away together, breathe, and have a few quiet moments during a busy day.

The historic streets, summer light, and the relaxed energy of the evening created the perfect setting.
