Cambridge Pre Wedding Shoot at Anglesey Abbey in Autumn
March 13, 2024
When Hatty and Andy suggested having their Cambridge pre wedding shoot at Anglesey Abbey, I was genuinely excited. See, becoming a Dad has changed me in ways I didn’t expect. One of those changes is that I now proudly own a National Trust membership. A sentence that would have absolutely humbled the twenty-something version of me who spent weekends chasing fashion shoots and city life. Now? Give me a good coffee, somewhere beautiful to walk, and enough room for the kids to run around and I’m completely sold. Honestly though, National Trust locations are incredible for photography.
Before kids, my wife and I had an English Heritage membership instead. We’d pack little picnics, drive somewhere pretty, and spend the afternoon eating pastries or sandwiches somewhere scenic. Looking back, not much has changed really. We still love finding beautiful places. We just now carry snacks for tiny humans too.

Why Does Anglesey Abbey Works So Well for A Cambridge Pre Wedding Shoot?
One of the things I loved about Cambridge pre wedding shoot was how relaxed everything felt. There was no pressure to perform. No awkward posing marathon. Just the two of them wandering through one of the prettiest locations near Cambridge while I documented what naturally unfolded.
That’s always the goal for me.
I think people sometimes imagine a couple shoot is going to feel stiff or overly curated, but the reality is usually the complete opposite. Most of the time we’re simply walking, chatting, joking around and stopping whenever the light looks beautiful. The best photographs often happen in between everything else.
Anglesey Abbey gives you so much space to breathe as well. You’ve got tree-lined paths, open gardens, pockets of colour everywhere, and during autumn it all becomes even more cinematic. The leaves were right on the edge of disappearing for winter, but there was still enough gold left on the trees to give everything that warm seasonal feel.
It was technically autumn bordering on winter, which in England can honestly mean anything from crisp sunshine to complete chaos. Thankfully, we landed somewhere in the middle. Cold enough for cosy layers, but warm enough that nobody needed those massive survival coats that swallow your entire outfit.

Autumn Leaves Make the Best Confetti
We didn’t have actual confetti with us for this Cambridge pre wedding shoot, but honestly, autumn leaves might be the next best thing.
At one point during the shoot I grabbed a handful from the ground, threw them into the air, and asked Hatty and Andy to show me their best first dance moves. Those little moments are always my favourite because they instantly break any nerves. Nobody’s worrying about what to do with their hands when leaves are flying at their face.
That’s usually where the magic happens.
Some of my favourite engagement photographs come from doing something slightly playful or unexpected. It doesn’t need to be elaborate either. A walk through somewhere meaningful, grabbing coffee together, dancing badly under trees, or stopping for ten minutes to watch the sunset often creates far more authentic photographs than forcing loads of complicated poses.

Do You Need Modelling Experience?
Like most couples I work with, Hatty and Andy told me at the start that they’d never had professional photographs taken before. Almost everybody says that. Almost everybody also says they’re awkward in front of the camera.
And honestly, that’s completely normal.
Part of my job is creating an environment where people feel comfortable enough to just be themselves. I’m naturally quite calm as a person and I think couples pick up on that quickly. There’s no shouting directions or making you feel like you’re on a reality TV challenge. I want people to feel peaceful around me because when you feel relaxed, your photographs immediately become more natural.
That’s also why I think engagement shoots are such a valuable part of the wedding experience.
I’ve shared some behind-the-scenes thoughts on what shapes my work and how I approach each engagement shoot and wedding in why people say I’m the best wedding photographer.

How Do You Build Confidence Before Your Wedding Day?
Here’s the truth about booking a Cambridge pre wedding shoot. It’s not really about learning poses. It’s about realising you already look amazing together. By the end of the session, couples usually leave saying some version of, “That was way easier than we expected.”
That confidence carries directly into the wedding day itself. You arrive knowing what it feels like to be photographed, knowing you don’t need to force anything, and knowing that you’re capable of looking relaxed and natural on camera.
If you’re thinking about booking an engagement or proposal shoot, choose somewhere that genuinely means something to you both. Maybe it’s somewhere you love walking together. Somewhere you’ve dreamed of getting engaged. Somewhere tied to memories you already share. Those places always add another layer of meaning to the photographs.
And years from now, those photographs won’t just remind you what you looked like. They’ll remind you how life felt in that season too.
