Therapist Branding Photography | A Case Study with CBT with Lauren

August 4, 2026

Branding

Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing CBT with Lauren, creating a library of authentic images that helped launch her website. It included head shots, relaxed portraits and we set up a scenario of a therapy session and I photographed it. If you’re a therapist, counsellor or healthcare professional, you’ll already know that your website is often the first impression someone has of you. People want to see you and get to know you. Before they read about your qualifications or experience, they’re already deciding whether you feel approachable, trustworthy and the right fit for them.

That’s why therapist branding photography isn’t just a traditional headshot. It’s about creating visuals to help potential clients feel comfortable before they’ve even made contact.

Why therapist branding photography matters

I had some counselling before we tried for our second child and I found it really helpful. Before I committed to the counsellor, I had to check her website out, get to know her a little bit, and then make the decision from there. Whether you’re a CBT practitioner, counsellor, psychotherapist, psychologist or another healthcare professional, you’re asking people to place an incredible amount of trust in you. Deep things are discussed, that people don’t even talk about with their closest friends.

For many people, making that first enquiry feels daunting. They want reassurance that they’ll be listened to, understood and treated with compassion. Your photographs play a surprisingly important role in communicating exactly that.

Professional therapist branding photography helps potential clients connect with the person behind the qualifications. Rather than relying on generic stock imagery or “I got this award” that they might not relate to, your website becomes personal, welcoming and unmistakably yours. Counselling directories are helpful and all, but they are just the door to the home that is your website.

When every photograph features you, your workspace and the way you work, visitors begin building confidence before they’ve even picked up the phone.

Photographing CBT with Lauren

Working with Lauren the Margate based CBT practitioner was a brilliant reminder that every branding session should feel as individual as the person in front of the camera. Rather than producing a handful of formal portraits against a plain backdrop, the goal was to create a collection of images that felt relaxed, natural and authentic. We wanted therapist branding photography that would give visitors a genuine sense of who Lauren is and what it might feel like to work with her.

That meant capturing a variety of portraits at a lovely lifestyle studio in Margate alongside photographs that reflected her professional environment. These images provide far more context than a simple headshot ever could.

Having a diverse gallery of photographs also gives much more flexibility when updating a website, writing blog posts, creating social media content or refreshing LinkedIn. Instead of repeating the same image everywhere, there’s a complete visual library to work with.

Beyond the headshot

A great head shot still has an important place on every therapist’s website. It helps put a friendly face to the name and creates familiarity. However, some of the most valuable therapist branding photography from a branding session are often the ones showing you doing your job.

Whether that’s welcoming a client into your practice, preparing your workspace, making notes, working on a laptop, arranging resources or simply interacting naturally within your environment, these photographs tell a much richer story.

They demonstrate professionalism without feeling staged.

More importantly, they replace the overused stock photographs that appear on countless therapy websites. We’ve all seen the anonymous images of people staring thoughtfully out of windows or smiling awkwardly over a clipboard. They don’t tell visitors anything about you.

Your clients deserve to see the real person they’ll actually be meeting.

Authentic imagery helps your website feel distinctive while reinforcing your credibility and professionalism. Head shot photography can be one dimensional, but branding encompasses more than just a portrait.

Why authenticity always wins

Throughout my career, I’ve always believed the strongest photographs come from creating an environment where people can simply be themselves, even in the corporate world.

Before specialising in branding and weddings, I trained in fashion photography and photographed editorial work, celebrities and commercial commissions. That experience taught me how to create polished, professional imagery, but it also reinforced something even more valuable.

The best photographs show the person for who they really are.

Today, based here in Kent, I work with businesses and professionals who want high quality photography without looking overly posed or corporate. My aim is always to create photographs that feel original, relaxed and completely authentic to the individual.

That means guiding people when they need direction, giving them space when they don’t, and creating images that feel like a genuine reflection of who they are.

It’s an approach that has helped everyone from luxury wedding photography couples to local business owners feel comfortable in front of my camera.

Video content for therapists

Although professional branding photography forms the foundation of a strong online presence, short video clips are becoming increasingly valuable. I wouldn’t call myself a videographer, but there’s a little something I can offer.

Simple B-roll footage of you preparing your room, greeting clients, writing notes, making a coffee or working naturally within your practice can transform your website and social media.

These short clips create movement, help visitors connect with your personality and can be used across Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook and your website for months.

I can capture this B-roll alongside your photography session, or if you’re looking for a more comprehensive production, I’m also happy to recommend trusted videographers and content creators that I regularly work with. A good combination if you have the budget, is having photography, videography and content creation on your shoot.

Together they create a powerful first impression that feels genuine and is super practical across the board.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a therapist branding session take?

Most sessions last between one and two hours, although I’ve had others choose 30 minutes or a full day.

Can we photograph inside my practice?

Absolutely. Photographing your real working environment helps create authentic imagery that clients recognise when they arrive. Flash helps me, and so does natural life – I’ll work with either.

Do I need to know how to pose?

Not at all. Most of the professionals I photograph say they dislike being in front of the camera (truth be told I’m not a major fan either). I’ll guide you throughout while keeping everything relaxed and natural.

Can you create content for LinkedIn? TikTok? Instagram?

Yes. Every branding session includes photographs suitable for LinkedIn, websites, social media, press features and marketing materials.

Is video available too?

Yes. I can capture simple B-roll footage alongside your branding photography or recommend trusted videographers for larger productions.
