Nearly twenty years in, the things I know about a wedding day have very little to do with the things that show up in a portfolio. A grid shows you the outcome. A good one shows you taste. Neither shows you what happened when wedding day chaos takes over and the whole approach had to change on the spot.
That part doesn’t photograph. But it’s the part you’re actually paying for, and it’s the part nearly two decades has drilled into me.
So here’s what those years as a wedding makeup artist have actually taught me and what each lesson means for the day you’re planning.

Composure Is a Skill, Not a Personality
Early in my career, I was booked to work on an A-list celebrity. I was new. She did not suffer fools.
I watched her greet the hairstylist, twenty years in the industry, and tell him exactly how she liked her hair done. She was testing him. She wanted to know in the first thirty seconds whether he knew what he was doing.
He did.
She relaxed.
Then she turned to me, and the rug was truly pulled from under me when she asked me to wrap my hands in tissue paper before I touched her. She didn’t want my skin to touch hers.
Bemused, I did her entire face with my hands in tissue mittens, my assistant watching on as I held back nervous tears and tried to keep my mittened hands from shaking.
And I finished it.
She loved it.
But she was particularly hard on me. At her level, she felt entitled to be assured by experience, but the truth was I was still learning.
I learnt something that day about holding professionalism. You don’t learn that in a classroom. You earn it on jobs that go sideways.
When you’re choosing an artist, this is the thing to feel for in a trial. Throw them a curveball. Ask what they’d do if your dress arrived late, if you cried your liner off, or if the room was boiling.
Watch whether they get flustered or whether they just answer.
Calm under pressure isn’t a vibe. It’s a track record.
One of the most valuable things an experienced wedding makeup artist brings to a wedding morning isn’t a makeup brush. It’s the ability to stay calm when everything around them feels unpredictable.
The Best Thing an Artist Can Do Is Make You Feel Safe
A while ago, a client told me she had very sensitive skin and asked me to use her own makeup instead of mine.
Of course.
Then I asked if I could at least use my own brushes. I assured her they were clean, invited her to have a look at them, and offered to wipe each brush I used with cleaner so she could be doubly sure.
“No.”
She handed me five of hers. Worn down, well-used, clearly well-loved.
I cleaned them and got to work without making a thing of it.
When I finished, she sweetly confided the truth. She had OCD and hadn’t been able to say so beforehand. She thanked me for not making her feel strange about it, said it was the best makeup she’d ever had, and asked her agent to pass on my details.

A wedding morning is emotional before anyone’s touched your face.
Nerves, family, tears, and things you’re slightly embarrassed to say out loud.
A beautiful Instagram feed is inspirational, but says nothing about handling anxious brides, sensitive skin, allergies, or the stuff people are scared to mention.
Don’t be afraid to highlight your concerns.
The answer tells you more than any photo.
You want someone who reads the room and makes it safe, because everything else follows from that.
The best wedding makeup artists understand that creating beautiful makeup is only part of the job. Helping someone feel comfortable, heard, and supported matters just as much.
“Photographs Well” and “Lasts All Day” Are Not the Same Thing
An experienced wedding makeup artist has seen their work in every possible condition, from summer heatwaves to dark winter ceremonies. I’ve done makeup in heat so intense the product melted before I’d finished applying it, where nothing would cool down fast enough for the hair to set.
I’ve worked in rooms with no natural light at all. No window to check against, no daylight to correct by, just kit lighting and trained instinct.
You only meet those conditions if you’ve been doing this constantly for a long time.
And every one of them teaches you which products actually survive a real day and which ones only survive a quick before-and-after.
So get specific when you ask.
Not “will it last?”
They’ll all say yes.
Ask how it holds at hour ten, in heat, in hugs, in the photos, and on video.
An experienced artist will have an immediate, specific answer because they’ve watched their work hold up, and fail, in every one of those conditions.
Range Is the Quiet Thing You’re Really Paying For
I’ve drawn eyebrows on, one hair at a time, for a client with alopecia.
I’ve taught myself how to make lashes stand and hold when there’s no natural lash underneath to support them.
I’ve worked on burn survivors’ scarred, sensitive skin that needs an entirely different touch.
Those jobs humbled me in a way the high-profile ones couldn’t.
When someone sits down having felt invisible, looks in the mirror, and sees themselves again, that changes how you look at your job afterwards.
An artist who has adapted to the hardest situations will adapt to your day without blinking.
Range isn’t a flex.
It’s insurance.
This kind of adaptability is what separates an experienced wedding makeup artist from someone who has only worked within a narrow range of clients and conditions.
So, When You’re Choosing
The grid will tell you whether someone has taste.
It won’t tell you whether they’ll hold the room when the day stops cooperating.
Ask your wedding makeup artist the awkward questions.
Notice who stays calm.
Notice who makes you feel safe before they make you look good.
That’s the difference.
It just doesn’t fit into a grid.
