Fashionable Wedding Photography at Cambridge Colleges

Cambridge University colleges offer some of the most stylish wedding settings in Britain whilst remaining places of study. Historic chapels, quiet courts and candlelit halls create an atmosphere few wedding venues in the UK can match.

As a luxury wedding photographer who once lived in Cambridge, these historic spaces are a treat to photograph weddings in.

Cambridge Colleges That Host Weddings

King’s College is arguably the most iconic of all Cambridge colleges. Its grand architecture and riverside gardens create a truly special backdrop for photographs. Inside, the reception spaces are impressive, with dark wood paneling and soaring ceilings that feel made for larger celebrations. Walking through the halls and gardens, you sense both history and occasion, and the scale of the architecture gives every moment a dramatic, timeless quality that works beautifully for editorial-style wedding photography.

Selwyn’s chapel is simply stunning. At the front, the three angels framing the couple during their vows make for a striking, intimate setting. The chapel’s acoustics are incredible, thanks to one of the best-sounding organs in Cambridge, filling the space with rich, resonant tones. The surrounding grounds are elegant and tranquil, providing quiet spots for portraits. Selwyn feels both historic and approachable, perfect for couples who want a wedding that balances warmth, grandeur, and an honour to Christian faith traditions.

Gonville & Caius sits along the High Street, where the lawns and gardens are pristine and often visited by ducks, adding a touch of charm. There are multiple beautiful areas for ceremonies, including the chapel, which has a unique character and sense of history. The grounds feel expansive yet intimate, with every corner offering a photographic opportunity. It’s one of those places where candid moments feel natural, and the setting quietly elevates both formal portraits and relaxed storytelling throughout the day.

Sidney Sussex is full of character, with some of the most beautiful trees and blossom in Cambridge. Its cloister areas are particularly atmospheric, offering a peaceful backdrop for portraits. The college has a warmth and charm that feels effortless, yet every corner is photogenic. On a lighter note, it’s also conveniently close to some of the city’s best pizza at Pizza Pilgrims, which always makes a stop here feel fun and personal.

Magdalene feels quietly intimate, tucked along the river with ivy climbing its walls. Although it's very close to the road running through Cambridge Its cobbled courts and tranquil gardens create a serene backdrop for portraits. There’s a sense of calm elegance here without too many looming pieces of architecture, perfect for couples who want a wedding that feels both romantic and grounded in history.

St John’s is grand without feeling overwhelming. Its Bridge of Sighs and long, tree-lined courts give portraits instant drama although you might hear lots of tourists nearby. However, the chapel and dining halls are amazing. The spaces have an open, airy quality that allows real moments to shine. It’s ideal for couples who love the history of the place right near but not quite in the very centre of town.

Queens’ has a charm that’s both scholarly and playful. Its riverside location and famous Mathematical Bridge provide iconic backdrops, while the intimate courts and cozy gardens feel wonderfully private. The combination of formal halls and outdoor spaces gives flexibility for both group photos and couple portraits.

Clare College has an understated elegance with its graceful courtyards and riverside gardens that are difficult to beat. The chapel feels intimate yet refined, while the courts and lawns offer calm, light-filled spaces for portraits.  The gardens are some of the most pretty in Cambridge, even with it being just next door to Kings College.
